The firm gradually opened up to collaborations with other clients, including public administrations, construction companies and private clients. <\/p>\n<p>CFCSL&#8217;s international activity also began in these early stages, collaborating with <i>Huarte y Cia<\/i> in Latin American countries, where Pr. <strong><i>Pr.<\/i> <i>Fern\u00e1ndez Casado <\/i><\/strong>had a notable prestige and projection thanks to his teaching activity and his technical publications. This international presence has been increasing and nowadays it is one of the main sources of activity of the company. <\/p>\n<p>Since its inception, the company has had the opportunity to participate in some of the most important civil engineering and architectural projects.<span style=\"color: var(--awb-text-color); font-family: var(--awb-text-font-family); font-size: var(--awb-font-size); font-style: var(--awb-text-font-style); font-weight: var(--awb-text-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--awb-letter-spacing); text-align: var(--awb-content-alignment); text-transform: var(--awb-text-transform); background-color: var(--awb-bg-color-hover);\">It has designed singular works, from the world&#8217;s first bridge built by successive cantilevers with prefabricated segments, to a world record in concrete cable-stayed bridges, and is currently participating in the design team of the largest cable-stayed bridge in the USA.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: var(--awb-text-color); font-family: var(--awb-text-font-family); font-size: var(--awb-font-size); font-style: var(--awb-text-font-style); font-weight: var(--awb-text-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--awb-letter-spacing); text-align: var(--awb-content-alignment); text-transform: var(--awb-text-transform); background-color: var(--awb-bg-color-hover);\">Throughout its almost 50 years of activity, the company has participated in some 900 projects, mostly bridges but also covering special structures of all types (high-rise buildings, towers, roofs, dams, transport stations and sports facilities) as well as rehabilitation projects for sensitive historical constructions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In 2025, the company becomes part of the Swiss group <strong>ARX<\/strong>. A civil engineer at the age of 19, he had an extensive professional career as an engineer for the Ministry of Public Works and as an independent consultant before founding the company that bears his name. <\/p>\n<p>His training and early works in the 1920s and 1930s coincided with the development and expansion of reinforced concrete in Europe, a material that Pr. Fern\u00e1ndez Casado studied in depth and whose constructive possibilities he explored with great dedication. With it he did most of his early works, some of which, such as the collection of Strict Height Bridges (1930-1950) or the prefabricated industrial buildings developed in the years 1940-1950, are undoubtedly some of the great achievements of this type of construction in Spain. However, he is probably best known as one of the main introducers and developers of prestressed concrete technology in Spain.   <\/p>\n<p>Since the 50&#8217;s of the last century he devoted himself to study and develop works with this new technique, and with which, mostly with the firm CFCSL for the founded, he made many remarkable achievements in the period 1960-1980. In addition to his professional activity, he was a professor at the School of Civil Engineering, holding the chair of Factory Bridges until 1976 and contributing to the training of several generations of engineers. His studies and technical publications on Strength of Materials, Structural Analysis and Bridge Engineering have been for a long time essential references in the Technical Schools of Spain and also reached a remarkable diffusion in Latin American countries.  <\/p>\n<p>The recognition of his great contribution to the development of concrete technology led him to be awarded numerous national and international prizes, including the Gold Medal of the International Prestressing Federation (F.I.P. F\u00e9deration Internationale de la Pr\u00e9contrainte) at the International Congress held in London in 1974, being the first Spanish engineer to hold it. Likewise, his special concern and his studies on the artistic and historical aspects of public works &#8211; where his work on Roman Engineering should be highlighted &#8211; led him to be the first civil engineer to be elected as a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid in 1974. <\/p>\n<p>This concern and interest in the aesthetic facet of public works remains within the company and constitutes, together with its high technical capacity, the hallmarks of CFCSL. Roebling Medal in recognition of his career in bridge engineering awarded at the ESWP International Bridge Conference, (USA 2007) and the Medal of Santo Domingo de la Calzada awarded by the College of Civil Engineers of Spain (2008).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>He has also received, jointly with Pr. J. Manterola, several awards for his contribution and that of the firm CFCSL to the development of structural engineering, such as the Architecture and Planning Award of the Madrid City Council and the Professional Award of the Association of Engineers and Architects of Spain (1994). <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In addition to his prolific professional practice, Dr. L. Fernandez has developed an intense research activity on the History of Public Works and Bridge Construction. This work is reflected in numerous participations in Congresses and in several monographic publications. Among them it is worth mentioning his book &#8220;Tierra sobre el Agua.
