Passing from one side of a river to the other can be done in many ways, but passing from one side to the other of the Segre river in Lleida, in the middle of the city, over such a well-kept and attractive river, is not so easy. It is an urban bridge in which the passer-by’s gaze will be fixed on its appearance, proportions and aesthetics. When we put such an impressive work as a bridge in front of the public’s eyes, it has to be done very well. The leitmotif of its design, in our view, was slenderness and spatiality. We could have set ourselves other parameters with which to build the bridge, but the thinner, slimmer and more elegant the deck, the better, and when passing over the bridge, the user is offered a space that he feels surrounds him and accompanies him. These two premises, slenderness and spatiality, have been combined and balanced in the bridge by means of the bracing system. Opening the piers or closing them on the deck configures a space defined by the trajectory of the accompanying stays. Here we have opened them, which is suitable for a medium-sized bridge like this one; closing them together to form a triangle is more suitable for a large bridge.

This fact configures our solution for the bridge over the Segre as a unique solution, quite sophisticated in its design and construction, but whose final result has been very satisfactory. There are many people who have worked, who have put their talent at the service of a work like this, other people, notable and hard-working, who have helped, supported, driven and risked to have a work that is worthwhile for their beloved city. I think that the efforts of so many have served to ensure that the new dam that crosses the river does not detract from the precious and beautiful city of Lleida.
