Bridges Slabs

This work solves the problem of the exit from Pamplona of the new highway to Logroño, built by the government of Navarre, as it passes through Zizur Mayor, a residential town located 6 km from Pamplona and which was divided in two by the highway.

The Zizur project fulfills three purposes. One is simply structural, referring to how the bridges installed in a circular traffic circle should be. The second, and as important as the first, is to create a pedestrian link, reducing to a minimum the visual leap that occurs when passing from one side of the park to the other and crossing over a highway. The park must cross over the highway. Thirdly, and following an indication of the Government of Navarra, establish a “landmark”, a gateway to or from Pamplona for all those going to or coming from Logroño.

Therefore, as a circular traffic circle, we have gone to realize a complete disk that supported only at four points solves the circulatory and structural problem at once. To make a plate with holes in the center, for a circle of 47.2 m inner diameter and 73.8 m outer diameter and that structure supported at four points is a major resistance problem.

The torsions that are produced are formidable as well as their coupling with the bending which leads to a rather complex prestressing, but nevertheless the final formal result is surprising and very beautiful. The cross section of this plate or disc is also circular and its edges have been treated with care.

For pedestrians, we have built a different bridge, attached to the road bridge and surrounded by a garden in order to minimize the presence of the highway on the pedestrian.
