The towers of the Gordie Howe Bridge reach their final height. USA / Canada.
The countdown for both towers of the Gordon Howe International Bridge project to reach their final height has begun. While the US side tower has already reached its final height of 220m (772ft) with the last pouring of concrete, the Canada side tower will begin its final steps this September.
This adventure began in 2019 with subway work for the construction of six pillars per “tower leg” that were drilled into the bedrock to a depth of 36m (118 ft), a height similar to an 11-story building.
These tower legs form an inverted “Y” geometry and are made of reinforced concrete. For their construction, 51 different segments of 4.67 m (15.3 ft) in height are required, resulting in a tower of 30,000 tons (66 million pounds).
Twenty-seven anchor boxes and another eight formwork boxes are currently being installed inside the pylon head to hold the cable-stayed cables that will support the bridge deck and with it, its future roadway.
