On July 27, 2026, the Gordie Howe International Bridge—a new strategic link between Windsor (Ontario, Canada) and Detroit (Michigan, United States)—was officially opened to traffic.
The bridge is named after Gordie Howe, a legendary Canadian hockey player and Detroit Red Wings icon, whose career symbolizes the close ties between Canada and the United States.
The first car to cross the bridge was a red Dodge Charger driven by Gordie Howe, grandson of the legendary hockey player, accompanied by his wife, Margaret.
With a main span of 853 meters, it is the cable-stayed bridge with the longest span in North America. The structure has a total length of approximately 2.5 kilometers, features 220-meter-tall towers, and has six traffic lanes.
The new bridge establishes a direct connection between Ontario’s Highway 401 and Michigan’s Interstate 75, strengthening one of North America’s most important trade corridors and facilitating the movement of people and goods between the two countries. In addition, it features a separate lane for pedestrians and cyclists, which is scheduled to open on August 5.

(CFC), a member of ARX | smart minds, is proud to have participated, alongside fhecor, in the design of the main bridge and the engineering of its superstructure’s assembly, as part of the design team led by AECOM for Bridging North America (FlatironDragados, Fluor Corporation, and Aecon Group Inc.).
